I want to use the API to allow people using my project website to search my data set on Open Context. I don’t think I want to display the results on my site, but if there’s a way of using the search to direct them to a subset of results on Open Context, or to produce a downloadable data set, that’s what I’m hoping for.

I will look into KORA some more. At its core, this is basically the DB from my diss, that I’m trying to turn into a more accessible format that people can add to and interact with. I’m a little afraid of going over board.

Okay, I have the rough outline of a website, and I have a CSV file with the raw data about each sherd included in the ceramic database. The next step is to figure out how to make the two things interact with one another. I think this means that my next step is creating some sort of search function through Bootstrap in which different search fields…[Read more]

Hi Katy, I’m not seeing a link on this post. Am I missing it? If it’s the same page you posted on Twitter a few days ago, those were great! I’m planning on sharing with my students!

Thanks Maria! I used these video tutorials to get me started: Bootstrap 3 Responsive Tech Site. Starting from scratch was daunting, but getting a basic structure up let me see the ways that I could adjust it to how I need it. Looking forward to seeing yours!

Yes, we’d talked about virtualvaldivia.matrix.msu.edu.
My GitHub repo is https://github.com/sarahmrowe/Virtual_Valdivia. Right now it’s just the webpage, but csv files for the data will be going up soon!

Thanks for the bootstrap suggestion. It really is pretty easy to use, and there are lots of tutorials out there to help. I’ve created the general framework for the site (bilingual!) and worked on some style things. I’ll start filling out the actual content soon. The big challenge will be to create a query script that will allow people to search…[Read more]

Okay, I’ll look into what those take and dust off what I learned from Codecademy. Not going to lie, kind of scared.

I think virtualvaldivia.matrix.msu.edu would be ideal. About as easy to remember as possible.
As for preinstalls, I don’t think there’s anything in particular that I will need (but that comes with a big question mark). I’m familiar with editing WordPress sites and adding plug-ins, and if that’s how it works then I can add stuff once I get in and…[Read more] -

Gah! Yes, Open Context. But even with that clarification I think my project is having a bit of a Princess Bride moment (“I don’t think that word means what you think it means”). I’ve been going back through the other projects and reading updates, and I think what I’m trying to get at is the same type of work flow that Alice McMichael describes -…[Read more]
